Simple to use, produces a high quality grind, and built to last, the Rancilio Rocky is an excellent grinder for home and light-duty commercial use. The doser version makes it easy to grind beforehand in anticipation of heavy duty coffee requirements.

The Rancilio Rocky Doser comes with a redesigned coffee drip tray and still uses the same hardened steel burr cutting disks as the Rancilio MD40 commercial grinder and has a heavy-duty thermally protected motor. Because the Rocky uses large 50mm (2 inch) cutting disks, the powerful motor is able to run at a lower RPM. This ensures that the coffee does not burn and also makes the Rocky grinder very fast and quiet. Its high throughput of coffee (8 seconds per shot) will reward you time and time again, when you are in a hurry or late for work.

Although called grinders, true espresso grinders, such as the Rocky, more properly cut the coffee. This ensures that the coffee packs easily and provides consistent resistance regardless of the tamp pressure. The Rocky has a nearly infinite range of settings for super accurate espresso settings and can easily handle extra-fine settings such as what's required by the Rancilio Silvia. The Rancilio Rocky Doser grinder also has a 30 shot doser capable of accurately dispensing multiple espresso shots if desired. This is a great feature if you are having a dinner party or are in an office environment, but for one or two espresso occasions we still prefer the more ritualistic and Barista-approved shot-on-demand method - grind, flick, flick, flick!

This is no light-weight grinder
Weighing in at over 17 lbs, the main body of the grinder is constructed out of die-cast aluminum, painted over with porcelain-enamel paint for durability and scratch-resistance. The painted iron-frame underneath provides long-term strength. The 304-brushed stainless steel accent is the same finish as the Silvia, but will look good beside any espresso machine.

Built to last a lifetime
Professionals will change the burrs after 500 lbs, but most residential users should get 750 lbs easily with no adverse effect on their espresso. Lets see... at 63 espressos per lb and 1 lb per week, well you do the math.

Which Rocky grinder to buy - doser or doserless?

The Rocky Doser is handy for larger volume users and also acts as a handy receptacle if you overfill your basket. You can also "grind to order;" just turn on the grinder and keep flicking the lever until your basket is full. With the Rocky Doserless, just place your portafilter handle under the spout and grind - you will soon perfect the art of gauging the correct amount. Remove the "stainless fork" and you can grind large amounts of coffee into a storage container or equivalent.

    The best home grinder

Posted by Lon Temereski on 2012 Dec 12th

This Rockey grinder is a must have for anyone who has bought a premium espresso maker. While some do not like the doser, we always make 3-4 double espressos in a row and like the fact that after 30 seconds of grinding you are ready for your morning espressos. In addition to using Rocky for the daily grind for our ECM Giotto Premium, it also makes the finest grind for the stove top espresso maker we take wilderness camping. I just can't get away from excellent coffee!

    First Grinder - It's Fantastic

Posted by Dave Wozney on 2012 Dec 12th

We had always taken a lazy approach to espresso using pre-ground beans from the big chain with the mermaid logo. What a huge difference better quality beans freshly ground make. Bought the Rocky Doser Grinder - it's dead simple to get it operational, and it does an excellent job of grinding without any fuss whatsoever. The doser seems very handy to me, but I could see doing without it (haven't done any grinds for groups yet though). Highly recommended (albeit without any comparison to other grinders).

    No more frustration!

Posted by Aara Macauley on 2012 Dec 12th

After much research, debate and saving up, I finally purchased the Rocky last month. I was already familiar with the commercial version, so knew pretty much what to expect. Although a little less industrial than its big brother, the Rocky gave me just what I was hoping for - a strong, sturdy machine that is precise enough to dial in the perfect espresso for my machine. It is very user friendly, simple to adjust and built to last. Finally!

    Great Grinder!

Posted by Adam on 2012 Dec 12th

When I decided to get a home espresso machine it quickly became apparent that the Silvia was the machine to get. That meant the grinder to get was the Rocky! As my first real espresso machine and coffee grinder I was a little unsure about the price, but reviews and encouragement from the coffee guru's was all I needed. A very solid grinder with a commercial motor - the Rocky is a real champion and is a heavy unit. For a unit of its size and performance it is surprisingly quiet. With a wide range of settings it produces a consistent grind. Very happy with the grinder. I also enjoy the doser as it helps keep mess and waste down. Espressotec was very fast in shipping and would gladly buy from them again. Highly recommended!

    Awesome machine

The Rocky Doser is simply an awesome machine. It's easy to use and doesn't make a huge mess of coffee grounds (which has made my wife very happy). I purchased the doser version, although the non-doser may have been a better option for home use - oh well, I'm still very happy with this grinder (and it looks cool!).

    Rocky Grinder is a winner

Posted by Char on 2012 Dec 12th

I bought the Silvia on recommendation from several colleagues with more experience with making espresso than I. I am very impressed with the knowledgeable staff (answered all my questions) and speed of delivery. The Silvia and Rocky grinder are everything stated. I consider this my first machine as the previous (Black & Decker Christmas gift) just didn't live up to my expectations. I wanted a machine that would produce a quality product and have longevity in performance. Very happy with my choices. Thank you, Char

    Very good!

Best grinder I've owned so far, only problem is that the plastic base broke. A bit of superglue and it was like new. But if you're thinking of saving a few bucks and go with Saeco or anything in a flashy box at department stores, don't! Chances are you'll keep this grinder for years, so it will pay itself off and you will save yourself a lot of frustration when your espresso machine does not live up to expectations. So take the hit and you will not regret it.
